When the Pain Doesn’t Stop
You’ve tried doctors, physical therapy, maybe even surgeries or medications — but the pain keeps coming back. It’s natural to feel stuck, frustrated, and hopeless.
Here’s the good news: not all pain comes from injury or damage. For many people, the nervous system gets “stuck” in a pain loop, even after the body has healed. This is known as neuroplastic (primary) pain — and it is treatable.
Is Your Pain Neuroplastic?
Not all pain is the same. Some pain comes from structural causes — things like injuries, arthritis, or medical conditions that can be seen on scans and tests. That kind of pain often requires medical treatment, and therapy like this isn’t the right fit.
Other pain, however, is neuroplastic (also called “primary” pain). This means the brain and nervous system are continuing to send pain signals even though the body has healed, or even when there isn’t an ongoing injury. Neuroplastic pain is real, very common, and it can be changed.
Here are some clues your pain may be neuroplastic:
Pain moves around or changes in intensity without clear cause
Symptoms flare up in times of stress, but calm down when you’re relaxed
Medical tests don’t fully explain the severity of your pain
Doctors have been unable to identify a clear structural cause — or may have even suggested that your pain could be neuroplastic in nature
Treatments like medication, injections, or surgeries haven’t worked
If you’re not sure whether your pain is structural or neuroplastic, that’s okay. We can explore this together in a consultation. If you’re open to the possibility that your pain could be neuroplastic, then Pain Reprocessing Therapy might be a good fit.
Note: If you’re experiencing new, worsening, or unexplained pain, it’s important to consult with a medical provider before beginning therapy. For more information about Pain Reprocessing Therapy and PRT-informed physicians, you can visit the Pain Psychology Center.
How Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) Can Help Neuroplastic Pain
PRT is an evidence-based approach that retrains the brain to break free from chronic pain signals. Research shows that it can help:
Reduce or eliminate chronic neuroplastic pain
Shift the brain’s “danger signals” back into a sense of safety
Address the fear, anxiety, and tension that make pain worse
Restore confidence, energy, and freedom in daily life
My Approach
I am trained in Pain Reprocessing Therapy through the Pain Psychology Center. Speaking from personal experience as both a therapist and a client, this is a powerful method that can truly help; I recovered from chronic neuroplastic pain through using Pain Reprocessing Therapy myself.
In our work together, we will:
Distinguish between structural pain (from injury/disease) and neuroplastic pain (from the brain)
Build tools to calm the nervous system and retrain pain pathways
Use practices like somatic tracking and mindfulness to reduce fear of pain
Reclaim your body as a safe place to live again
For clients whose pain is closely tied to depression or trauma, Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy in conjunction with PRT can be an effective treatment option.
